Travelling with our bestie’s is one of the most fun ways to travel, whether with just one girlfriend or a group I just love the feeling of planning and going on a girls getaway! I have travelled to over 50 countries, sometimes solo, sometimes with my fiance and many times with my girlfriends. In this article I share 10 of our favourite destinations to go to on a girls getaway so you can start planning your own for 2018!
1. THE GILI ISLANDS, INDONESIA
An hour and a half boat ride from Bali, you can hop over to the Gili Islands – made up of Gili Air, Gili Meno and GilI Trawangan – to find the most beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Depending on your travel preferences you can pick an island that suits your group of girls, or visit them all since they are just a few minutes boat ride from one another. Gili Trawangan is the party island, but on the north side you can find some quiet, Gili Meno is the most relaxed of the three where you will spend your days exploring by bike and your evenings watching magnificent sunsets and Gili Air, is somewhere in between the two, there are more restaurant and bar options than Gili Meno, but a far more relaxed vibe than you will find on Gili T. But the one thing that all the islands offer is a great place to visit with friends and enjoy snorkelling, sunset cocktails, overwater swings and delicious food.
2. POSITANO, ITALY
Whilst I have not visited Positano myself, We Are Travel Girls Co-Founder Vaness Rivers has inspired me to go there in 2018. The gorgeous town on the coast of Italy seems like a perfect girls getaway destination. Taking a boat over to the island of Capri, spending lazy days at the beach drinking rose and eating lemon sorbet, exploring the coastline by moped all sound dreamy. So Positano has definitely reached the top of my bucketlist, along with trips back to Cinque Terre, Burano, Florence… oh the list of places in Italy to visit never ends, now I just need to convince my girlfriends to come with me!
3. LAPLAND, FINLAND
Hands down, one of the most fun girls trips that I have been on was to Lapland, Finland to stay in the glass igloos at Kakslauttanen and at the Arctic Ice Hotel in Rovaneimi. The combination of fun outdoor activities, such a snowmobiling, ice fishing and husky sledging, coupled with evenings watching out for the northern lights through the glass roof of the igloo bar with a mulled wine in hand made for the cosiest girls getaway. One of our favourite activities during the trip was running through the snow in our bikinis and warm hats to a private hot tub, where we sat under the stars whilst sharing a bottle of champagne! The best thing about doing this once in a lifetime trip with a group is that it significantly reduces the cost and makes it a more affordable adventure.
4. CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY
Cheap flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia have made this part of Turkey extremely accessible to tourists. Cappadocia is popular in spring and summer months and is also absolutely stunning in winter when the landscape is covered in snow, the year round beauty makes it a great place to organise a fun girls trip. Made famous by Instagram, one of the most popular places to stay is Sultan Cave Suites where you can watch the sunrise from the rooftop and capture those Insta-worthy shots with hot air balloons in the background. (Side note – we may be adding Turkey to our Travel Girls Getaways trips in 2018 so make sure to subscribe to be first to hear about it!)
5. SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA
Siem Reap may not spring to mind immediately when you think of a girls getaway destination, but I can assure you this a great place to head with your girlfriends and you should do it ASAP! I visited Cambodia for the first time 15 years ago, and again earlier this year. The difference is dramatic, with a lot more tourists since the international airport opened. Siem Reap is the gateway to visiting the temples of Angkor Wat, which are so fun to explore with your bestie. When my friend Sarah and I visited many years ago, we ran around pretending we were Angelie Jolie in Tomb Raider for most of the time, now there are a few too many other people around to be quite so silly – but it is still an epic destination to explore with your friends.

6. MYKONOS, GREECE
The white washed streets, blue doors, pretty beaches and nightlife make Mykonos a fantastic escape in in Europe. I have visited twice, once with girlfriends and once with my fiance, and loved the island both times. On a girls trip you are spoiled for choice when looking for a bar to enjoy sunset cocktails, there are many activities such as paddle boarding or exploring the island on quad bikes and if retail therapy is your thing, you can spend your days shopping through the gorgeous narrow white washed streets. My favourite places to go with girlfriends are Mykonos Nammos restaurant and beach club which turns into a party later in the day, and Hakkassan for cocktails and delicious dining in the evening.
7. OBERTAUREN, AUSTRIA
Probably one of the most fun trips (if you count partying as a fun trip) I have ever been on has to be The Ski Week in Austria. I had previously been on Yacht Week in Croatia and the BVI’s, which are great fun but since you are on the yacht much of the day you don’t get to meet up and hang out with all the other guests as much as you do on The Ski Week. I went to Ski Week with my good friend Lucy and since she is a way better skier than I am she spent the days skiing with a group of more experienced skiers and snowboarders and I made friends with other less experienced skiers. If you do part ways to ski, like we did you will then meet-up throughout the day for mulled wine and chicken schnitzel lunches, champagne sessions in the hot tub, pond skimming (look it up) and daytime snow parties. And in the evening of course you apres ski every night, sometimes dressed in lederhosen and dirndls… The absolute ultimate girls getaway expereince!
8. OJAI, CALIFORNIA
One of my favourite places in California, is the small town of Ojai in the mountains close to Santa Barbara. Ojai is a great place to kick back, relax and unwind with some girlfriends. Activities on offer are hiking, cycling, yoga and my personal favourite – wine tasting. We stayed at the Ojai Rancho Inn, a very affordable accommodation option that has a swimming pool and garden area with a nightly bonfire. My tip for a trip here is to go to the market, buy some cheese, wine and marshmallows and have yourself a little private garden party by the fire!

9. TOKYO, JAPAN
In November I took my first trip to Japan with a group of girls on our Travel Girls Getaways photography tour in collaboration with Lisa of TheWanderingLens.com. There were seven girls exploring Tokyo together, going from traditional temples at sunrise to the craziness that is Harajuku and we loved every element of the city. I recommend getting up early so that you can beat the crowds at any of the temples or places of interest and also tying in a trip to stay in Kyoto after your time in Tokyo.

10. LONDON, ENGLAND
I am originally from the UK, and spent 15 years living in London. The latter few years in Notting Hill which is my favourite part of town. London offers so many great activities for a girls weekend, from afternoon tea, to sightseeing, to exploring the colourful houses of Notting Hill, Chelsea and Kensington. My top picks for a visit to the city during winter are to head to the Victoria and Albert Museum, take in a show (my preference is The Lion King), go ice skating at Somerset House or the Natural History Museum, spend an evening at Winter Wonderland and head for Sunday roast and mulled wine at The Westbourne in Notting Hill.
