Confession: I am completely in love with Florence, Italy. After 1 year of living and working abroad in this enchanting Renaissance city, I have completely fallen for Firenze. One of my favorite things about living in Florence is the variety of things to do, culture to experience, and delicious food to taste while exploring the city with my girlfriends. If you find yourself on a girls’ trip to Florence, be sure to include these must-do activities on your itinerary!
1) GET THE CUTEST COFFEE IN TOWN
Italy is famous for its coffee shop culture, and it is so easy to see why! In Florence, there are so many cute cafes that you’ll have no problem staying caffeinated as you stroll about the city. For the most adorable cappuccino in town, I recommend trying News Cafe. With every cup of coffee, you’ll get a unique piece of latte art, perfect for sharing on Instagram! For more great places to sip a cappuccino, be sure to check out my favorite cafes in Florence that are guaranteed to satisfy your coffee addiction!
2) SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
What better activity to do with your girls than hit the town and start shopping? Florence is home to an incredible shopping scene. From the city’s colorful leather markets to its beautiful designer storefronts, there is something for everyone in Firenze. Be sure to step off the beaten trail and head to some of Florence’s lesser-known shops, like this unique artisanal workshop with no sign that sells amazing handmade jewellery. Just be sure to save room in your suitcase for all of the souvenirs you will be tempted to bring home!
3) TASTE THE GELATO
If you and your girls head to Florence and didn’t consume as much gelato as possible, did you really go to Florence at all? Make it your personal mission to taste test all of the amazing gelaterias in Florence. Your sweet tooth will thank you!
4) HIT FLORENCE’S MUSEUM
Firenze is home to some of the best museums in the world! You should visit 1 (or 10) of them before you leave the city! My personal recommendation? Be sure to see Michelangelo’s David (aka my Italian boyfriend) at the Accademia, and don’t miss the world-famous Uffizi. If you don’t have time for one of Florence’s larger museums, then stop by the Piazza della Signoria and enjoy the city’s free open-air museum.
5) RIDE A PINK VESPA IN CHIANTI
Add a sense of adventure to your girls’ trip by heading out to the countryside surrounding Florence…on a Vespa! This is sure to be a highlight of your trip! I’ve been three times, and cruising around Chianti never gets old. Never been on a Vespa before? Don’t worry, it is easy to learn and there are several group tours you can take.
6) CLIMB THE DUOMO
A trip to Florence wouldn’t be complete without climbing the Duomo, or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. This awe-inspiring cathedral is simply unforgettable. Visitors can choose to climb the bell tower, cupola, or both. You’ll also receive admission to the museum, baptistry, and the crypt beneath the church. While lines can often be quite long, I can promise you that the view from the top is worth the wait.
7) GO WINE TASTING
What better way to celebrate spending time with your girlfriends in Florence than with a wine tasting? Wine tasting is a delicious way to learn about Italian food and culture. While all of Italy is famous for its wine production, take some time while in Florence to learn about local Tuscan wines. Many wine tastings also include samples of typical Italian staples such as cheese, prosciutto, balsamic, and olive oil.
8) HEAD ON A FLORENCE STREET ART TOUR
Florence has a pretty cool street art scene. One of the best ways to explore the city (and get lost) is to simply wander around looking for great street art. Over time, you’ll discover certain artists and styles, and will suddenly spot their works everywhere! Clet is one of Firenze’s most popular street artists. You’ll see his work on nearly every street sign in Florence. The artist has gained such popularity that he even has a store you can visit, and take a piece of Florence home with you.
9) SIP A SPRITZ AT A ROOFTOP BAR
One of my favorite things to do with my girlfriends in Florence is getting together for cocktails at our favorite rooftop bars in Florence. Fortunately for us, there are quite a few great ones to choose from! I recommend heading out before sunset so you can watch the city transition from day to night. While you are up there, why not try enjoying a Spritz-a popular Italian cocktail made with Aperol. The taste isn’t for everyone, but you will see this orange drink all over the city!
10) CATCH A SUNSET AT PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO
Grab your girls, a bottle of vino, and head to the best spot in town to catch the sunset from the famous Piazzale Michelangelo. This large Piazza overlooking the city has an excellent view of the Arno river, Ponte Vecchio, and even the Duomo. Head up early to grab a spot on the stairs, and enjoy the lively atmosphere around you as the sun goes down. This is the perfect way to spend your last evening in Florence.
