The Bernese Alps are a breathtaking mountain range consisting of three peaks (Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau) in Western Switzerland, in the canton of Bern. The range is part of the larger Swiss Alps and encompasses over 800 lakes and countless kilometers of picturesque snow-capped peaks.
This area offers excellent skiing in the winter and incredible hiking in the summer.
There are several options for places to stay in the Swiss Alps, including Interlaken, which is the “big town” of the Swiss Alps. It is large and situated at a crossroads where you can easily get to and from other smaller towns, such as Mürren, Wengen, Gimmelwald, and Grindelwald.
If you want to plan a trip to the Swiss Alps, this guide has everything you need to know to make it an unforgettable experience, including the best towns to stay in and great hotel options in each town.
Switzerland is a not a budget destination and can be quite expensive, but it is possible to explore the Swiss Alps on a budget. In this guide we’re sharing the best luxury, mid-range and budget hotel options in each town.
Where I stayed In The Swiss Alps: Hotel Eiger
The picturesque town of Mürren is my favorite village in the Swiss Alps. Mürren is small, car-free town, accessible from the valley floor via the cable car to mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg.
Because it is not accessible bar car, Mürren has managed maintain the charm and authenticity that travelers long to experience when visiting a small town in foreign country. I have spent two weeks in the Swiss Alps, on two different trips, and fell in love with Mürren.
The village of Mürren exudes all the things I appreciate about the Swiss Alps: mountain charm, simplicity, breathtaking views, fresh mountain air, less tourists, amazing hiking trails, cute cottages, beautiful gardens and wild flowers, farm animals and wildlife, fun mountain pubs, great restaurants, excellent hotels, welcoming locals, and a happy, carefree energy that reminds you how luck you are to be alive.
My favorite hotel in Mürren, Hotel Eiger Mürren, embodies all of the things I love about the Swiss Alps. Ideally situated across from the Mürren Train Station with breathtaking mountain views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, Hotel Eiger offers the ideal home base for exploring the best of the Swiss Alps.
I loved the spotlessly clean mountain modern rooms, the amazing breakfast buffet, and the friendly staff. I greatly appreciated that there was fresh coffee in the lobby every morning (with large take away cups) and fresh apples that were ideal for an afternoon snack after a long hike.
One of the best amenities Hotel Eiger Mürren offers is their larger, indoor lap pool. I felt so lucky to be able to return to the hotel after hiking all day and be able to swim in a heated, indoor pool and relax my tired muscles in the sauna.
The restaurant at Hotel Eiger Mürren is excellent ( you have to try the cheese fondue!) and the hotel bar is very fun. Even in off season the bar and restaurant were open late and very lively, but the rest of the hotel was quiet and peaceful.
If you’re looking for an excellent hotel for a group trip, family vacation or relaxing couples getaway I highly suggest Hotel Eiger Mürren!

Best Time Of Year To Visit The Swiss Alps
If you are planning a ski trip to the Swiss Alps, the ideal time to visit is the winter and spring months, December through March, when there is good snow coverage.
The most popular time for hiking in Switzerland is the warm summer months, but I suggest visiting in the fall when it is less crowded and more affordable.
The beginning of September is arguably the best time to take a hiking trip in Switzerland because the weather is still nice and most tourists have dispersed. The average temperature in Mürren in September for example is 52 degrees compared to 57 degrees in July and August.
It might sound chilly but the weather is quite pleasant in the fall and ideal for hiking. Check out my Swiss Alps hiking guide for all the information you need to plan an unforgettable hiking trip!
