Santorini. If it’s not already on your bucket list, add it. If it’s already there, scoot it all the way up to the top. Santorini defies all definitions of the word ‘island’. Built on cliffs thousands of feet above sea level, this Greek Island will leave you forever dreaming in blue and white.
VIEWS VIEWS VIEWS
Try to book a hotel in one of the towns with a view of the Caldera like Fira, Imerovigli, or Oia. Who knew the leftovers of a volcanic eruption could be so breathtaking!
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND
Once you’ve found a hotel with a view of the Caldera, make sure it has a pool! Can you say double win? Santorini has some of the coolest shaped pools I’ve ever seen. Not to mention most of them, since built on a cliff, look like infinity pools.
SUNSETS
They say Santorini has the best sunsets in the world. I didn’t believe it (we’ve all seen some pretty great sunsets, right?), but then I saw it. Imagine beams of sunlight reflecting off of the white washed buildings, Crayola painted skies, and distant islands outlined in iridescent colors. While it may be tempting to go to Oia to watch the sunset, it tends to get overcrowded and touristy. These sunset photos were all captured from Imerovigli!
OIA
Go to Oia! You may be thinking, wait, I thought you just told me not to go there. If there’s any picture of Santorini in your mind, it is most likely of Oia. Pronounced “Eee-Uhhh”, this town is filled with all the beautiful blue domes you’ve been expecting. If you’re up for a bit of a walk, adventure down to Amoudi Bay and eat the freshest of fish, get a glimpse of the hanging octopi, and walk off the beaten path to catch some locals cliff jumping!
GREEK FOOD
Oh my goodness, the food. So fresh. SO good. Ordering something different every time I ate was the best decision. The spreads, the Greek salad (which has no lettuce, by the way), the souvlaki (think skewers), the baklava, the Greek yogurt, the gyros. The gyros! Greece’s 2 Euro bite of heaven. When in doubt (or debt), eat a gyro.
BLEND IN WITH THE LANDSCAPE
Bring white and blue, lots of white and blue. You will fall in love with your photos. While it might be hard to hear, leave your heels at home ladies (stairs, stairs, and more stairs, Santorini is on a cliff, remember?). Don’t let that hinder you from bringing your best outfit and a cute pair of flats or sandals. Rompers and sundresses were my best friends.
GET WANDERFULLY LOST
Oh the beauty of no cars. Walk throughout the villages on the small, picturesque walkways. Turn right, then left, then right again. Go down the stairs and down some more stairs. Get lost. Everything you see will be beautiful. And don’t be afraid to dance on the rooftops.
