Ever heard of Ohrid, Macedonia? Neither had I until I looked in to taking a trip through the Balkans. I recently spent a week in this charming little lake town and absolutely loved it! The town itself has so much character. The cobblestone streets, old-style stone buildings, and the lake-side cafes and restaurants make it a must see destination.
Not only is the town beautiful but it also holds so much history. There are several old churches to explore and when you add the fortress on the hill, it pretty much looks like the setting of a fairy tale.
The lake provides several opportunities for both fun activities and relaxing on the beach. There are paddle boards, kayaks, and boats all available to rent. Or, in the evening you can take a stroll along the boardwalk.
One of my favourite parts about Macedonia is that its totally off the beaten path. When we were there, people would ask where my husband and I are from and be so surprised when we told them we are Canadian. They asked how we even knew about their country since, according to them, Ohrid is not a typical destination for North Americans, or even Western Europeans. I don’t know about you, but finding hidden gems like that makes a place that much more exciting because you know that it hasn’t been visited by mass amounts of people. Plus, it usually means more affordable prices. Gelato for 60 cents? Sold.
If you’re looking for a peaceful vacation that’s off the beaten path, I hope you consider this beautiful hidden gem. Happy exploring!
