HOTEL REVIEW: MANDARIN ORIENTAL, PRAGUE

Built on the site of a former 14th century monastery, Mandarin Oriental, Prague has managed to beautifully preserve a piece of the city’s history and heritage while offering guests a five-star luxury experience. Perfectly positioned on the castle side of Prague, the Mandarin Oriental is just a short walk from Charles Bridge, old town Prague, and all the beautiful sites the capital city of the Czech Republic has to offer. With 79 elegant rooms, 20 individually decorated suites, a beautiful spa, a state-of-the-art gym, a private wine grotto dinning room, a gorgeous ballroom, beautiful grounds and fantastic dinning, the Mandarin Oriental, Prague is truly a destination in itself.

MY EXPERIENCE AT THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL, PRAGUE

I took a cab (use the yellow AAA taxi) from the Vaclav Havel airport. Thirty minutes and 24 EUR later, we pulled into the hotel walls and I instantly fell in love with the grounds. The Mandarin Oriental is close to everything yet tucked away on a side street that offers peace and reprieve from the summer streets, overcrowded with tourists. Upon arrival, I was greeted at the taxi by name and was informed that my room was not quite ready so I would be treated to a cocktail of my choice while I waited. I enjoyed a glass of rosé and embraced the 90° weather on the beautiful patio at Spices Restaurant until my room was ready.

Soon the concierge came to show me to my room, and upon entrance, I was impressed. The room was large, by European standards, and well appointed with a large closet area, two beds, a desk area, and large windows that allowed the sunshine to seep through and light up the whole space. I ordered coffee, which came in only 10 minutes, and then I explored the grounds and used the gym while I waited for my friend to arrive. This was my first time to Prague and the hotel staff at Mandarin Oriental were extremely helpful, giving suggestions of what to do and see in the city, and suggesting and booking our dinner reservations.

EAT & DRINK AT THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL

I am a total foodie and my friend, Anne, is a wine sommelier, so we set out to try the best restaurants and bars in Prague. We were both very surprised at how fantastic the cuisine and cocktails were while being so reasonably priced! We dined at Mandarin Oriental the first night, enjoying the warm summer night on the beautiful terrace at Spices Restaurant & Bar. The drinks were good and the food was fantastic! We then finished off our first night in Prague at Black Angel’s Bar, which quickly became our favorite bar in Prague because of the killer atmosphere and delicious artesian cocktails. Another great, upscale bar is L’Fleur, which has a hip vibe and a creative drink list.

In the mornings, we took advantage of the beautiful breakfast buffet that is included in your stay at Mandarin Oriental. For snacks and drinks during the afternoon, try Grosseto Marina on the river and Balcony Bar. For a delicious Chef’s-choice-Asian-fusion dinner go to Sansho, and for the best meal you will have in Prague, try La Finestra. Although they specialize in meat, the veggie and seafood options are on point; the salads are crisp and full of complimentary flavors, and the salted fish is mouthwateringly good. They also have an excellent wine list, and the service is impeccable!

PRAGUE TIPS

It is easy to get an UBER in Prague and very cheap. Ladies, the streets are cobblestone so wear flat shoes. Prague is pretty casual so you will not need heels even at the nicest restaurants and bars, but if you can’t live without them, choose a thick heel so that you can still walk around. This is a walking city so comfortable shoes are a must! During our June trip, the city was very crowded with tourists, which made getting good travel photos really hard! So I recommend visiting Prague in spring or fall to avoid the crowds.

When in Prague… You must try a “Czech Donut,” which is a donut ice cream cone!
