Isle of Skye, Scotland, is a place like none other–from the scenic hikes to the coastal cliffs, these northern islands are the perfect summer escape. With long daylight hours leaving plenty of time for exploration and warmer temperatures for swimming in the wild, it’s the spot that needs to move to the top of your bucket list!
To really embrace the lifestyle and the adventurous spirit of Skye, staying in a Wigwam is essential. Yes, Wigwam is a real word. No, not a typo. I did a double take the first time I heard it as well but the more I researched I found Wigwams scattered the Isle of Skye and this is THE Skye experience.
I’m not much for camping but “glamping” sounded like something I could get into! These Wigwams are tiny minimalist cabins equipped with the essentials (or whatever you deem essential…I’ll explain). Through Wigwam Holidays you can find these adorable accommodations all over the UK and really embrace nature on your next adventure.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Wigwams are small but the space is utilized super efficiently. These are truly state of the art cabins with double insulation and heating and electricity! I wanted more of a true “glamping” experience, i.e. running water, and opted for a deluxe cabin. We had a bed, sitting area, kitchen table with sink, kettle, and refrigerator as well as a bathroom with shower. For those wanting a more authentic go, there are cabins available with sleeping quarters only…but don’t fret, there’s a main cabin available with toilets and showers!
WHAT I WISH I HAD KNOWN
These cabins are perfect for having a night in, grab food and grill out! This is especially helpful in Skye, where small towns are few and far between. Also, when we visited in April, it was still quite cold in the night and we worried about being cold but these cabins are so well insulated–turn on a little heat and you’ll be toasty in no time!
WHY WIGWAM
I had to know…the term comes from Native American culture in which wigwam means domed dwelling or house, used for something more permanent than teepees!
WIGWAMS AROUND THE UK
