While the rest of Australia feels the chill of winter at this time of year, we here in the Top End are experiencing the beautiful Dry Season. 30 degrees every day, the sun is shining, the place is thriving – double happy points!
Darwin becomes a haven for travellers and tourists of all shapes and sizes; the backpackers who swan around barefoot searching for their next hit of Mother Nature, the young ones who come here to do what they do at home…party, the family from down south on a weeks holiday trying to escape the winter weather, and the retired couple exploring Australia in their Winnebago. The place is buzzing and here are 10 reasons why you should come and be part of it!
1) THE WEATHER
Sunshine = happiness. Consistently gorgeous weather for six months, you know you’re in for a pleasant day every day!
2) MINDIL BEACH SUNSET MARKETS
Every Sunday and Thursday of the Dry Season, Mindil Beach comes to life with thousands of tourists and locals alike to enjoy the famous market culture, eat the amazingly diverse cuisine, watch the didgeridoo man belt out a tune at a gazillion beats per minute, and all while having front row seats (a spot on the beach) to the iconic Darwin sunset over the sea.
3) NATIONAL PARKS WITH STUNNING WATERFALLS
The Nothern Territory is an amazing place to explore! Lots of beautiful nothingness for as far as the eye can see, the most amazing waterfalls, perfect Instagram opportunity on every corner, and refreshing swimming spots. With National Parks like Litchfield, Kakadu and Nitmiluk all within 3 hours drive from Darwin itself, you’ll be spoilt for choice – so better do them all, yeah?
4) TO EXPERIENCE THE EASYGOING LIFESTYLE
Traffic? What’s that? There’s very little to stress over here in the Top End.
5) DRINKS IN THE TROPICS
Whether you’re after a lairy night out or a few social drinks with beautiful sunset views, Darwin has it all.
6) CROCODILES
Darwin is the croc capital of the country and it wouldn’t be right to come here without seeing them. Head about an hour out of town to the Adelaide River for the Famous Jumping Crocodile Cruise and see those bad boys (and girls) in their natural habitat. It’s a pretty cool trip! If you’re not up for a drive then you can even catch them right in town at Crocosaurus Cove. Let’s see if you’re brave enough to enter the Cage of Death! (I’m not).
7) FESTIVALS & EVENTS
Whether you’re a music buff, a yoga enthusiast, or keen on the odd bet, there is something happening literally every weekend!
8) EXPLORING THE NORTHERN TERRITORY
Darwin is part of the amazing Northern Territory. Road tripping down the centre of Australia from Darwin will not leave you disappointed! From the tropics down to the desert, there’s some seriously jaw-dropping places to see! Checkout #NTAustralia on Insta if you don’t believe me.
9) THE PEOPLE
Darwin is home to super friendly people! Everybody smiles at each other or exchanges a ‘how ya going’ when walking past one another – and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! You will also be surprised at how much a stranger will be willing to help you out too.
10) SUNSETS
Who doesn’t love a beautiful sunset? And they’re extra special here in Darwin. We’re lucky enough to catch them rise too!

The picture of crocodile… is AMAZING. How is it even possible to capture it?! I wouldn’t enter the Cage of Death either. I like the pictures of almost every post I read. I really do. Your picture, however, stand out. Great job!
