Welcome to paradise! Bora Bora, with its warm turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and luxurious overwater bungalows, is a dream destination for many. This enchanting island in French Polynesia is perfect for those seeking relaxation, adventure, culture, and an opulent escape.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Bora Bora for my mom’s 50th birthday, and let me tell you, it exceeded all expectations. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking to indulge in the beauty of the South Pacific, Bora Bora is sure to leave you spellbound!
Here is an in-depth review showcasing three of the best hotels in Bora Bora – and arguably, three of the best hotels in French Polynesia.
Overview of Bora Bora
Bora Bora, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” is a stunning island located in French Polynesia. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty, Bora Bora is a popular destination for honeymooners, luxury travelers, and those seeking a tropical paradise.
Location
Bora Bora is situated in the South Pacific Ocean, northwest of Tahiti, and is part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia.
Geography
The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef, with the remnants of an extinct volcano at its center. The iconic Mount Otemanu rises majestically from the center of the island, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Overwater Bungalows
One of the most distinctive features of Bora Bora is its overwater bungalows. These luxurious accommodations are built on stilts over the lagoon, providing guests with direct access to the crystal-clear waters below.
Marine Life
Bora Bora is home to a diverse array of marine life, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The lagoon is teeming with colorful fish, coral reefs, and even the occasional manta ray or shark.
Activities
In addition to snorkeling and diving, Bora Bora offers a variety of other activities for visitors to enjoy. These include jet skiing, paddle boarding, hiking, spas, and guided tours of the island.
Culture
The culture of Bora Bora is deeply rooted in Polynesian traditions. Visitors can experience traditional dance performances, sample local cuisine, and learn about the history of the island through visits to archaeological sites and museums.
Luxury Resorts
Bora Bora is known for its luxury resorts, which offer world-class amenities and services. Many of these resorts are located on their private motus (small islets) and offer unparalleled views of the lagoon and Mount Otemanu.
Accessibility
While Bora Bora may seem like a remote destination, it is actually quite accessible. The island is served by an airport with regular flights from Tahiti, making it easy for travelers to reach from major cities around the world.
Top Three Hotels in Bora Bora
Between my past as a contributor to Huffington Post Travel, my experience as a travel blogger and “influencer,” and the luxury travel I’ve booked on my own or alongside my family and friends – I’ve been very fortunate to experience some of the most luxurious accommodations around the world.
Bora Bora gets hospitality. If you travel frequently, you know what I mean when I say that some destinations are more tourist friendly than others. Some have high standards that strive to appeal to a luxury clientele. Only a few can actually meet those standards.
There is a privilege of traveling to a country where the resorts compete against each other to be “the best.” The truth is, you’ll have an incredible experience if you stay at any of the hotels I experienced in Bora Bora.
That being said, I just can’t rank one better than the other. They’re too good. What I can do is share with you how each hotel stood out from the rest, and which hotel to go to for which type of experience.
The three hotels I’ll be discussing, in no particular order other than what I traveled to:
1) Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora
The Four Season Resort Bora Bora is the best for special occasions: They know how to upgrade an experience. We celebrated my mom’s 50th birthday, and their attention to detail was the best I’ve experienced – champagne, decadent cakes, macaroons, balloons, flower crowns, and more.
2) Conrad Bora Bora Nui
The Conrad Bora Bora Nui has one of the best room layouts and the best/largest beach access: It boasts an infinity pool looking into the beach, and a spa nestled in the treetops — yes, a treehouse spa.
3) St Regis Bora Bora Resort
The St Regis Bora Bora Resort has the best customer service and the very best dining: Every guest gets a butler, and the restaurant has a view so special, people boat in to experience the gastronomy, even if they aren’t staying on the property.
The right hotel for you depends on what you look for as a traveler. If you’re a foodie or “people person,” stay at the St Regis. If you want the extra frills, you’ll love the Four Seasons. Lastly, if you want the most space and easiest beach and jungle access, then the Conrad Bora Bora is right for you.
What The Three Hotels Have In Common: Spectacular, Beachside Accommodation
While each hotel has its own unique charm, all three hotels excel where it counts.
Luxury Bungalow Suites
All three resorts offer a range of luxurious accommodations, including overwater bungalows and beachfront villas. Each room is beautifully appointed with Polynesian-inspired decor and features a private terrace or balcony overlooking the lagoon or the beach.
Free Water Sports
The resorts offer a range of water activities for guests to enjoy for free, including snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Guests can explore the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon and discover the vibrant marine life that inhabits the area.
Activities
Guests can enjoy a variety of activities, both on land and in the water. From snorkeling and diving in the lagoon to exploring the areas by bike or on foot, there is no shortage of things to see and do.
Luxury Amenities
All three properties offer a range of luxury amenities, including fitness centers, cabanas, tennis courts, and a private yacht for charter.
The St Regis, Bora Bora
The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is a true gem in the heart of French Polynesia, offering unparalleled luxury and a wealth of amenities that cater to the most discerning travelers. The resort boasts breathtaking views of Mount Otemanu and the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon.
Here’s my take on what makes the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort unique:
Best for Dining Experiences
The resort is home to some of the finest dining establishments in Bora Bora. Guests can indulge in exquisite cuisine at restaurants like Lagoon by Jean-Georges, which offers a blend of French and Asian flavors, or Sushi Take, which serves up fresh sushi and sashimi in a stunning waterfront setting.
Top for Spa
The Miri Miri Spa by Clarins is a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. Set amidst lush tropical gardens, the spa offers a range of treatments inspired by ancient Polynesian healing techniques, as well as traditional spa therapies.
The Only Resort with a Butler Service
Like all St Regis Hotels, every guest at the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is treated to a personalized butler service. From unpacking and packing, pressing clothing, and bringing you morning coffee (a complimentary in-room beverage service), the butlers are very accommodating. Furthermore, you’ll mostly want to explore the property by foot or bike, but the butler service also provides rides on a golf cart. Lastly, I loved asking our butler to help me with photos :)
The Canoe Breakfast
My favorite experience at the St Regis (and an overall favorite for the trip) was the breakfast brought to the villa in a canoe. Not only was the meal exceptional, but we really enjoyed canoeing in the water — getting a different view of the mountain and property.
But again – the meal was truly exceptional, the St Regis has a knack for great dining.
Largest Private Pools in the South/ the Two-Bedroom, Overwater Royal Suite Villa
We stayed in a spacious 3,455 foot villa overlooking breathtaking views of Mount Otemanu.
Symmetrically, there are a total of two tables & four beach chairs across from each other.
Overall, the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is a haven of luxury and tranquility, offering guests an unforgettable experience in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.
The Four Seasons Resort, Bora Bora
The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is a luxurious retreat located on the stunning island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Renowned for its excellent service and breathtaking views, the resort offers a range of amenities and experiences. Above all, the Four Seasons excels in catering to special occasions, as celebrated at the resort.
We celebrated my mom’s 50th birthday at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, here’s an overview.
Five Star-Service
The Four Seasons is renowned for its exceptional service, and the Bora Bora resort is no exception. The staff is dedicated to ensuring that every guest has a memorable and enjoyable stay, from arranging excursions and reservations to providing personalized recommendations. Both the restaurant manager and concierge went above and beyond, time and time again, providing a distinctive experience.
Best for Special Packages
The Four Seasons Bora Bora offers special packages for birthdays, weddings and honeymoons, and more — making it the perfect destination for anyone looking to celebrate with their loved ones in paradise.
From balloons, to photographers, to flower crowns, guests can order details to upgrade your experience.
The Four Seasons Bora Bora also has a beautiful little chapel for anyone looking to get married or renew their vows.
The Only Resort with a Helipad
The resort features its own private helipad, allowing guests to arrive in style and comfort. Helicopter transfers offer a breathtaking aerial view of Bora Bora and can be arranged for airport transfers or scenic tours of the island.
Best for lunch
My favorite lunches on the trip were both at the Four Seasons. The first is a Tahitian-style ceviche, and the other an ahi tuna bowl.
Bathtub and pool with a view
The overwater bungalow at the Four Seasons Bora Bora looks out at Mount Otemanu.
My mom’s 50th birthday was simply a time to unwind and recharge.
Overall, the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is a true paradise. It offers guests an extraordinary experience in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.
The Conrad, Bora Bora Nui
Nestled in the heart of French Polynesia’s pristine beauty, Conrad Bora Bora Nui is a luxurious retreat. The hotel’s layout is a masterpiece of design, with overwater bungalows that seem to float on the crystal-clear lagoon. They offer guests the ultimate privacy and indulgence. These bungalows boast panoramic views of the turquoise waters.
The hotel’s location also provides easy access to the island’s stunning natural attractions. Indulge in pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush jungle. Guests can explore the island’s hidden treasures on guided tours or simply relax and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds them.
Spa with a view
The resort’s spa offers a range of luxurious treatments with a one-of-a-kind view.
Guests can indulge in massages, facials, and body scrubs. All are performed in a tranquil setting, nestled in the treetops, overlooking the bungalows and beaches.
Infinity Pool
The resort boasts a stunning infinity pool overlooking the lagoon, providing the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. The pool area also features comfortable loungers and cabanas for guests to unwind in luxury.
Cultural Experiences
The Conrad Bora Bora Nui offers a range of cultural experiences that allow guests to immerse themselves in the rich Polynesian heritage of the region. Activities include traditional dance performances, ukulele lessons, and lei-making classes. Not to mention, many coconuts!
Overwater Bungalows – spacious & with hammocks
We stayed in separate villas next to each other. For one-bedroom villas, the Conrad really shows off as spacious. The open floor plan from the bathroom through the bedroom into the dock, gives a continuous view into the ocean.
Bora Bora Top Three Hotels Wrap Up
Overall, Bora Bora is a truly magical destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, luxury and adventure. It’s no wonder that it is often considered one of the most romantic and sought-after destinations in the world. No matter where you stay, you’ll have a spectacular trip.
