It was a cold and rainy March, but nevertheless, we were married and heading off to our Australian honeymoon. We couldn’t be more excited! It had always been on my bucket list to visit the land down under, so when we decided on going to Australia for our honeymoon I just couldn’t wait to get there!
Now don’t get me wrong, I was extremely scared of all the poisonous animals this country has to offer, but I pushed that thought aside and focused on all the fun activities that were planned. After a long flight, we had finally landed in Sydney, Australia.
Australia is considered the largest country in Oceania and it is known for being the oldest, flattest, and driest continent. This country captivated me because of how diverse the variety of landscapes are, ranging from deserts to oceans, all the way to rainforests!
I hope you are up for an adventure because that is what my Australian honeymoon was filled with. Lots and lots of adventures! Below, I am going to give you some tips and places to visit to create the ultimate honeymoon experience in Australia.
HONEYMOONING IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
WHERE TO STAY?
First, you are going to want to choose a romantic place to stay, considering this is your Honeymoon. We chose to stay at the luxurious Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney. This hotel is right at the heart of everything. We had views of the Opera House and the Sydney Bridge! The hotel is reasonably priced and has a great rooftop bar. What more can you ask for?
WHAT TO DO?
1) ROMANTIC DATE NIGHT AT THE OPERA HOUSE
You can’t visit Sydney and not attend a show at the Opera House. They offer plenty of performances other than Opera. Get all fancy for each other, head out for a nice dinner and drink, and end your night with a show at the Opera House. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience. Make sure to book your tickets in advance though as they tend to sell out!
2) BE A KID AGAIN AT LUNA PARK
If you have a child like a spirit in you, then Luna Park is the place for you to let that out! Enjoy a fun day at the amusement park. Turn your stomach on those rides, have your spouse win you a stuffed animal, and then finish your day by eating some gelato from Gelatissimo Kirribilli in the park.
Tip: If you are up for it you should bike across the bridge to Luna Park. We rented our bikes from Bonza bike tours right next to our hotel.
3) FOR THE INSTAGRAM INFLUENCERS
Alright, let’s all be honest here. You want to know where some of the most instagrammable spots are in Australia. Although, this is not in Sydney, it is close by. Head to Bondi Beach and swim in the Iceberg pools for that classic shot. Have your spouse get the perfect angle and enjoy a great splash for only about $5 USD.
4) FOR THE SPORTS LOVERS
My husband is the biggest sports fanatic I have ever met, so of course we had to attend some sports game while on our honeymoon. If you are looking to get into a real Australian event then head to a Roosters’ Rugby Game. The Roosters are Sydney’s professional Rugby team.
This adventure actually turned out to be super fun! We got burritos beforehand and then headed to the stadium. We were surrounded by local Australians who are so passionate about the sport of rugby. At first, it was hard to understand all the rules, but by the end, we knew exactly what was going on. It was so fun to cheer along with all the funs and see the Roosters win the game in the end!
5) HEAD TO MANLY BEACH
My last suggestion for things to do on your honeymoon in Sydney is one for those who like relaxing a bit more. You can take a boat over from the Sydney Harbour to Manly Beach for a nice relaxing day. Enjoy the wind in your hair, the sand on your toes, and the sun on your face at this little beach town. There are quite a few surf shops and coffee shops to walk around in. Enjoy lunch on the beach and a view of the surfers.
Tip: Make sure to bring a beach towel and your swimmers in case you choose to lay out or go in the water. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
HONEYMOONING IN CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA
Now, if you have the time I highly recommend heading over to Cairns for the second part of your Australian honeymoon. It is a short flight from Sydney and offers quite a different landscape. If you are looking for less city life and more beach vibes, then Cairns is where you want to be.
Cairns is considered the gateway to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. I agree because this is where we visited the reef from! You can look forward to beautiful beaches and tropical rainforests during your time in Cairns. Let’s get into the best way to honeymoon in Cairns!
WHERE TO STAY?
If you want to feel like you are in a tropical oasis then you must stay at Kewarra Beach Resort! It is the perfect spot for honeymooners.
The resort is about 45 min from downtown Cairns. You can choose between a private beachfront Bungalow or a private Pandanus Bungalow that is nestled up in the rainforest. We chose to stay at the beachfront Bungalow. They offer two pools for you to relax at, beachfront access, morning Yoga classes, a restaurant, and a spa.
Tips: Mention that it is your honeymoon and they will have a bottle of champagne for you in your room. I recommend you rent a car from them to use for your excursions. It got pricey using Ubers and their pick up services. Car rentals are very affordable and would have saved us money in the long run.
Bonus Tip: Surprise your new partner by decorating the room with fun wedding and party decorations in celebration of your recent marriage. They will love it!
WHAT TO DO?
1) A ROMANTIC RELAXING DAY
Whether you choose to stay at the Kewarra Beach Resort or not, I highly recommend you and your spouse plan out a spa day. The Kewarra Beach Resort has a spa right on site, as I am sure other resorts do as well. It was nice to have a change of pace in our day. Enjoy a nice breakfast in the morning, relax by the pool or the beach, then head to the spa for a couples session of your choice. You will never feel more relaxed and in love with your spouse after a good massage or facial.
2) SNORKEL THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
This excursion was one of my favorite highlights from our trip. It was an all-day event with the company The Reef Experience. Hop on a boat with about 40 other passengers then head out to the Great Barrier Reef for an adventure of a lifetime.
Enjoy a nice a “homemade” or “boat made” breakfast and a delicious lunch during your time out on the reef. Experience a fun and informative teaching session on which animals you may see while snorkeling and try scuba diving out on the reef. They may have a VIP experience if you prefer a more intimate session; however, my husband and I had a great time on the “normal” experience.
Tip: If you get seasick bring some ginger chewable tablets along with you to help settle your stomach.
3) FOR THE ADRENALINE JUNKEES
If you are a thrill seeker then this could be the excursion for you. No matter what vacation I go on, I always have to find a way to get an adrenaline rush (even if it is on my honeymoon). Bungy jumping was my adrenaline rush for this trip. My husband got his sports game and I got my fill of an adrenaline rush. Our resort set this all up for us! Get ready to get your heart pumpin’ and your feet a jumpin’ at the AJ Hackett Bungy jump.
4) HOLD A KOALA BEAR
Snuggle up close with a Koala Bear. Get the perfect insta shot with your new spouse holding a koala bear together. Could you ask for anything cuter? Head to Kuranda Koala Gardens for this experience. Along with holding a koala you get to take a sky tram over the rainforest, optional hikes, eat lunch at the top, see and feed other animals, and purchase some great souvenirs.
Alright mates, there you have it! My ultimate guide to honeymooning in Australia. If you choose this trip for your honeymoon I hope that you and your spouse have a blast! Make sure to take time to make each other feel special throughout the trip. Celebrate and reminisce on the biggest day of your life. Talk about all your adventures ahead. Take time to discuss what your future looks like together as one unity now and how you are going to love each other well. Happy honeymooning!
