The Andaman Resort in Langkawi, part of the Luxury Collection brand, is a true five star hotel. Not only is the hotel itself absolutely beautiful, but the location and surrounding area are incredible as well.
On one side is a pristine private beach, with beautiful white sand and clear blue water. On the other side is a 10 million year old rainforest, complete with exotic animals and flora everywhere. Here I share my experiences at this beautiful resort and hope to inspire you to visit the island of Langkawi and the Andaman.
The Andaman, Langkawi
The Andaman is composed of 178 rooms and suites, all luxuriously furnished in a contemporary Malaysian style. Taking advantage of its amazing location, each room offers a view either of the Andaman Sea or the rainforest, so you can pick your favourite setting when booking a room. The resort itself is massive, offering 6 dining options, an amazing winding rainforest themed pool, a high quality spa, and all sorts of natural attractions on the beach and rainforest. Sufficient to say you won’t be bored while staying at the resort!
Andaman Langkawi Hotel Facilities
As you drive up to the hotel, you can immediately tell you are in for a special stay. The winding road takes you to the heart of the rainforest away from the crowds of Langkawi. You will enter through the impressive lobby, complete with an interesting map of Langkawi made from sand and coral. The lobby also has a nature desk, where you can speak to an on-site naturalist and learn more about the history of the area.
Keep walking through the lobby and you’ll find the gift shop, including unique items specifically made for the Andaman and a 24 hour business center. I was able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while printing my boarding passes, and they provided a spare laptop charger after mine broke! These little examples of quality customer service are found everywhere in the hotel, and lets you relax and focus on having a good time.
Incredible Rooms
The Andaman has a room for every type of traveler, starting at the Deluxe rooms all the way to the Presidential Suite. Regardless of which type of room you book, you will have a great view of either the rainforest or the ocean. I was in one of the absolutely stunning Executive Pool Suites, and if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion I can fully recommend it. Located on the first floor, my room faced the ocean which I could see from the large patio, complete with it’s own sun loungers, outdoor shower, and private pool!
The room itself was equally as impressive, with a separate living room from the bedroom. Each was furnished with very large TVs and floor to ceiling windows to appreciate the incredible view. The amazingly comfortable king size bed faced the window, so you can pull back the curtains and take in the ocean view first thing in the morning. There’s also an oversized bathtub and a separate rainfall shower, along with double sinks for getting ready. The room was so impressive I almost didn’t want to leave, but there was so much to do at the hotel that I had to get out and explore!
Activities Around The Resort
The Andaman has all sorts of activities throughout the hotel, no matter what kind of experience you are looking for. There is the state of the art 24 hour “V Fitness” gym, which offers all sorts of machines, cardio, and weights to get in shape before going to the beach. If you prefer to get your exercise in the sun, you can rent a kayak, paddle board, or wind surf board at the hotel’s Water Sports Center, all of which were extremely reasonably priced. Golfers can book a round at the Els Club Teluk Datai course, a beautiful course designed by famous golfer Ernie Els. And if you have children, there is a “Young Explorer’s Club”, which offers educational excursions so they can learn about the nearby rainforest and coral conservation in an iPhone-free environment!
Fortunately, these guided nature excursions aren’t just for the little ones. The hotel has several nature tours each day open to all the guests. There is a complimentary “Rainforest Awakening” tour each morning, where an experienced naturalist takes you on an hour walk around the rainforest next to the hotel. If you prefer a nighttime experience, there is a similar “Rainforest After Dark” tour, where you might spot one of several flying animals, including flying foxes and flying lemurs! Plus there are some trails through the rainforest you can take leading you to the next bay.
On the ocean side, the hotel has several programs involving coral conservation, including their own coral nursery experience, marine laboratory, and reef walks. In fact, I was so interested in the Andaman’s conservation efforts that I’ve dedicated an entire separate post on WeAreTravelGirls.com, Coral Conservation At The Andaman, Langkawi.
The Spa At The Andaman
If you’re idea of a dream activity is spending a day at the spa, then the Andaman has you covered. The “V Botanical Spa” is located slightly up the road from the main lobby of the hotel so it is nice and quiet and set in the middle of the rainforest. The view from the spa itself is one of the best on the island, so I would encourage you to wander up here even if you are not having a treatment! There are a range of treatments available, including unique ones like the “Cleansing Lime and Floral Bath” and the “V Signature Ocean Ritual”, along with all the traditional treatments you would expect.
For my spa day, I had the “Song of the Malay Rainforest Ritual”, one of the signature treatments at the Spa. The rainforest is extremely important on Langkawi and to the Andaman itself, so they created a unique spa treatment to reflect this. Using traditional healing and medicinal herbs, the spa combined a wonderful traditional Malay massage with a Gamat Body Envelopment. Each spa treatment takes place in its own villa on the hill, so you will hear the sounds of the rainforest during your treatment, plus you can enjoy a spectacular view of the ocean below. Given all the travel I’ve been doing lately, the massage and body scrub was definitely needed and I felt completely rejuvenated by the time it was done!
Restaurants At The Andaman
After you are nice and relaxed from your massage, you can get your fill from one of the six different on-site restaurants. You will start your day at The Restaurant, which is the main restaurant in the center of the hotel for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast was especially good each morning, with several rooms of options ranging from a waffle and omelet chef, a pastry room, Eastern and Indian stations, and even a make your own Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar!
Dinner at the Jala restaurant was equally as impressive and unique. Located just off the beach, Jala is primarily a seafood restaurant which serves only the freshest fish. While most places might make this claim, at Jala you can pick out the exact fish you want at the counter! The friendly chef guided my selection (I went with the Barramundi which was exceptional), and also made recommendations for side dishes and the method for cooking the specific fish, steamed, fried or grilled.
To top off the experience, the entire restaurant is covered in sand so when you enter your shoes are taken away in a basket, so you can enjoy the meal with your feet in the sand! There is also a large focus on sustainability and supporting local fishermen, and the meal was one of the most memorable during my entire trip in Malaysia.
I also recommend the Tepian Laut restaurant for lunch and dinner, located right on the water for a perfect view. The lunch is mostly Asian favorites, with particularly good chicken and beef skewers. For dinner, the restaurant transforms and starts serving amazing Indian food, complete with an open air kitchen cooking fresh grilled meats and naan bread. Indian food is my favourite cuisine and I definitely had more than my share of fresh naan bread!
Overall
The Andaman truly lived up to its name as a five star resort. The resort itself is obviously beautiful, and I really loved the focus on conservation and sustainability. Every meal I had was wonderful, especially my barefoot experience at Jala. The only problem was I wish I was able to stay longer to keep experiencing everything the hotel has to offer! Whether you are looking for a girls’ getaway weekend, a romantic holiday with your significant other, or a fun family vacation with the kids, the Andaman has something for everyone and will leave you with lasting memories on your journey home.
